Tri-Council Scholarships (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR)

Waterloo encourages its students to apply for funding opportunities from Canada’s three major research granting agencies.

Waterloo’s internal adjudication process of tri-council scholarship applications information:

NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council)
SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council)
CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research)

Application procedures vary for these award competitions. In some cases, students apply directly to the agency; in others, Waterloo is assigned a quota, departments rank the applications followed by a university-wide ranking, and then the university Graduate Studies Office forwards the recommended applications to the appropriate agency.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to check the agency website for complete details pertaining to eligibility, application forms and the application instructions. Students should contact their graduate department scholarship coordinator for details regarding deadlines.
